Details of the June and July Meetings
Not much to report from our previous two meetings, the June meeting was well attended but another scheduling conflict left us homeless again in July. Tony was good enough to offer us his home for the meeting and a few took him up on his offer but since it was the night before the 4th of July the rest decided to call it an early night and head back home.

The road trip to Brookline News was held last month and a half a dozen or so show up for this now annual event. I was unable to attend but here all went well. There's always a good bargain to be found if you look close enough and a trip well worth being part. Looking forward to next year.

August Meeting: Russ Oulette visits SHPC
Russ Oulette of Home and Hearth Tobacco fame plans to pay us a visit during the August meeting to discuss the next SHPC tobacco blend. Russ is a wealth of knowlege when it comes to tobacco so you won't want to miss this meeting. I'm sure there will be plenty of tobacco to sample as well.

Sailing Alone Around The World By Joshua Slocum
In the late 1800’s Joshua Slocum turned a Oyster boat, already one hundred years old, into a schooner of his on design. Massachusetts locals in New Bedford gifted it to him as a joke. In 1895-1898, he sailed it around the world. Alone!

Slocum rebuilt the century old boat such that it was not only seaworthy but could also steer itself allowing the captain to sleep or read in the cabin during his expedition. The cabin was a virtual library lined with bookcases and stuffed with his collection. On his bureau sat his pipes and tobacco which he refers to several times in the book (which can be found free online in text or audio). Pre-historic Pipes
I have been given permission to reprint this article by the author Luiz Gondim.

The great importance of these pieces is that they are possibly among the oldest pipes in this world, proof of the existence of pre-historic civilizations in the region. According to the same geologist, the uncommon in this case is not only that the indigenous people were devoted in those days to the pleasure of smoking, but the fact that after starting with extremely primitive pieces, they gradually developed over the centuries a singular form of art, a carving technique, that can be seen on one of the pipes.

Pay Attention... we could be next?
I received the following from a J.R. Cigars Newsletter.

The Largest Tax Increase on any product in the Entire History of The United States is being seriously considered right now - and it's on CIGARS!

YOUR HELP IS URGENTLY NEEDED! The proposed taxes in the current Senate Finance Committee proposal will have a devastating impact on the cigar industry putting retail shops, mail order companies, distributors, cigar manufacturers, leaf tobacco growers and several hundred thousand workers in Central America out of business or out of work.

Under the current proposal, the cigar tax rate would increase an astounding 20,413% to a maximum of $10 per cigar! All large cigars would effectively be taxed at 53.13% of the manufacturer's selling price. In all of the Internal Revenue Code, no other product is subject to an excise tax that approaches this level. To compound the injury, a "floor stock" tax would be assessed on all products in inventory, and put a majority of the industry out of business in one fell swoop. Below is a list of Senators along with their phone numbers.

The full Senate is expected to consider the legislation next week, but possibly sooner. We need you to act NOW and immediately contact your U.S. Senators.

To assist you in composing your thoughts, here is what I communicated to my Senators:
This massive tax increase, the largest in the entire history of our nation, is not only unfair to cigar consumers and cigar retailers in this country, it poses a dire threat to several hundred thousand workers employed in the cigar industry in Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, Peru, Brasil, The Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, The Cameroons, Costa Rica, Panama and other Third World Nations. The effect on those economies and the ill will it will create toward the USA is staggering to say the least, and will have to be offset with increased Foreign Aid which may negate the sum total of the revenue created by this horrific tax. I urge you to oppose this tax.
