Details of the July Meeting
This one's going to be short and sweet since the summer is sucking
up all my time, energy and enthusiasm. Our July meeting was of your
average variety with a respectable attendance. I was hoping for
a reprieve of the previous month but I know summertime is a busy
time of year for most folks.
We did make a decision about dinner. Halfway Cafe is too unpredictable
and besides that... Tuesday night is kid's night. So we're back
to Bertucci's until further notice.
Update: The 2009 Club Pipe by Rad Davis
As may of you have already heard, the way we'll receive our club pipes
this year is a little different. Dock send out the address for Rad
Davis so you will need to send your payment directly to him. He has
made a few so far and will send whoever is next on the list as he
makes them. As a reminder, here are the members who agreed to buy
one:
Greg S., Derek G., Tim H., Ken C., Dock P., Rick F., Eric K., Tony
S., Nelson P.
I can't say I like it this way, it's always exciting when we all get
our pipe together.... Oh well... what are you going to do? Make sure
you bring yours to the meeting when you get it. I heard a couple folks
got theirs already and are very pleased. I'll post Greg's review next
month.

From
the Telegraph Office Below is a note from Doc Garr, Vice President
of the UPCA. I plan on sending the UPCA our email list so if you
would prefer not to receive these emailslet
me know as soon as possible.
UPCA News In
order to distribute UPCA information to as many members as possible
to keep them informed of UPCA events, we would like to create a
mailing list of the email addresses of members of your club. Please
forward to me the list at your earliest convenience.
We are also restructuring the website in order to provide a more
dynamic side to the site. We would like to post up-to-date club
news and events. Also if any of your members would like to write
information for a blog regarding pipes and/or tobaccos. Let them
and me know. We will try to accommodate them.
We hope to get the dynamic site up and going by September.
Of course the only way this dynamic aspect of the site can be successful
is with the cooperation of the local clubs. So expect to hear more
from me in the weeks and months to come.
Thanks for your interest and cooperation with UPCA.

News Icon and Pipe Smoker Walter Cronkite
Dies at Age 92 I guess when you look up the work anchorman in the
dictionary Walter Cronkite's picture is there. He was a regular
face in the living rooms of most Americans for many, many
years and set the bar for what a good anchorman should be.
I can't say I know of many if any anchormen to follow him
that have managed to pull their chins over that bar either.
One thing I do know was that Walter loved a good pipe and
it pleases me to see a pipe smoker living to the ripe old
age of 92.
So if you haven't already... the next time you light up your
pipe, smoke a bowl in his honor. Watch
a YouTube video about Cronkite's Life Read

This
Month's Tobacco Raffle
This month we have two blends from McLelland's 221B Series
Arcadia (50g tim) A
classic English, of Latakia, Orientals and Virginia. The label
mentions Arcadia being recognized by Holmes on Watson’s
sleeve by the fluffy white ash. This is a reference to “The
Adventure of the Crooked Man” where Holmes visits Watson
after he is married and notes that his smoking habits haven’t
changed from his bachelor days when he started smoking Arcadia.
McClelland Honeydew (50g tin) The
sweet, fragrant Honeydew was all gone by the time Susan Cushing
offered the container to Sherlock Holmes, but he was undoubtedly
familiar with this fine Irish flake's gratifying flavor, pleasing
aroma and gentleness on the palate.
Kahn's
Korner The bar-b-que for SHPC is set for August 30, at
1300 hours. I'll have the burgers and dogs ready to go on the ol'
bar-bee. For the rest of you, please feel free to bring something
to share. Potato salad, cole slaw, your own specialties: Chili,
wings, deserts, fruits, beer or scotch (especially scotch), etc.
I've got plenty of room on the b-b-q grill for stuff. Your women
are welcome as always. I have one cooler, a good size one, but if
you have one, too, it might be useful.
If you plan on attending please let me know via
email so I can get a head count.
I want to apologize to everyone for not getting some Kahn's Korner
reports to you. I'm involved in a show as many of you know, and
it's been murder. In fact, the way things are going I don't want
to recommend anyone come to this one. So there will be no announcement
unless things gel real well this weekend (opening Sat night).
